I am a stained glass artist. What is the cheapest and easiest way to copyright patterns that I have made?
I have an original collection of approx. 30 patterns that I would like to try to sell.
In the U.S. and other countries you enjoy copyright protection automatically. You don’t even have to write copyright or use the copyright symbol, but there are good reasons to do so. Other than some fair use excpetions, it is illegal for people to copy your work.
Enforcing copyright is something all together different. If you wish to sue someone for copyright infringment, you need to have your images registered with the U.S. copyright office. Although this can be done later, even after the infringement, you can only get punitive damages by doing it right away.
